While the Kindle 2 managed to stay in stock in its first few months of release, the original Kindle was known for being on backorder. In fact, some orders for the original Kindle were on backorder so long they were transferred into orders for the Kindle 2. The Kindle DX has already sold out, within a week of its release.

The Amazon product page for the DX says it will be back in stock on June 22nd. Of course, you can order it now and reserve your place in line.

The fact that it has sold out appears to mean one of two things:

  1. Amazon underestimated the popularity of the device and didn’t manufacture enough for the first round of purchasers.
  2. Amazon estimated correctly, but users are flocking to the DX faster than they picked up on the Kindle 2.

The DX isn’t yet passing the “subway test” since the only person I’ve seen with it is my husband. Have you seen a Kindle DX in the wild yet?

i haven’t seen any DX’s out and about. Heck, I haven’t taken mine out of the office… the cover selection is very slim right now and i’m waiting for the right one.

I wasn’t planning on getting myself a Kindle until I saw this newer larger version on the Subway. I got a good look at it and was impressed so I ordered one for myself last week. The backorder is killing me though.
