Amazon has released the source code that makes its Kindle family of devices run. It is available directly from Amazon.

From what I understand, this will allow other companies to create devices similar to the Kindle that will accept Kindle e-book formats. In the short term, this shouldn’t affect consumers all that much. In the long term, it could provide quality alternatives to Amazon’s device to consumers that haven’t yet bought a Kindle.
