In a press release on their site yesterday, Amazon announced that they are opening the Kindle platform to developers. A limited beta will start next month (click here to sign up to be notified) that will allow software developers to create what Amazon is calling “active content.” Their example is an active Zagat guide featuring reviews from around the world. Another company is developing games and puzzles.
EA Mobile – creator of hugely successful iPhone Apps and mobile games like The Sims 3 – is working with Amazon and “looking forward to bringing some of the world’s most popular and fun games to Kindle and their users,” says the Vice President of Worldwide Publishing, EA Mobile, Adam Sussman.
What does this mean for the Kindle owner? We may soon see apps developed for the Kindle similar to the iPhone App Store – to-do lists, calendars, games, and more. Personally, I’m looking forward to being able to do crosswords and sudoku on my Kindle like I would with a traditional newspaper. It will be extremely interesting to see what the world of software developers comes up with in the first few months of Kindle Apps.
There’s no word yet on an open date for the Kindle App Store, but stay tuned to KindleNewsAndReviews.com, or follow me on Twitter to hear the latest news as soon as Amazon announces it.
